Celebrity cat of Mt. Pulag, Pugal, has been taken into custody by DENR, according to an update by non-profit organization Furvent Animal Rescue and Advocacy.
In a post made through their Facebook page, they wrote, “Pugal has been safely brought down from Mt. Pulag. The DENR has taken custody of him, as domestic animals—especially cats—are not allowed in protected areas like Mt. Pulag due to the risks they pose to endemic wildlife.”
The organization respects and understands the decision. However, their hearts ache for Pugal as “he made a home there, won the affection of hikers, and touched so many lives with his charm. It’s hard not to feel for him, now that he’s been taken away from the only place he’s known.”
They have been informed about the person who has adopted the cat through DENR and will be brought to Bokod. Aside from that, the organization has also offered to take him themselves “to ensure he could be neutered and vaccinated” but they were told that the adopter “has already committed to caring for him.”
Upon seeing the said update, social media users took to the comments to share their thoughts on Pugal’s current situation.
Furvent Animal Rescue and Advocacy has made another post on their page updating everyone that they got ahold of the adopter which allowed them to visit Pugal.
“According to her, Pugal is safe, doing okay, and receiving proper care. She did notice that he’s still adjusting. He seems sensitive to light (possibly because it’s generally darker in Mt. Pulag, especially during early dawn), and he gets startled by sudden noises,” their post reads.
The adopter mentioned that if during their visit, they feel that Pugal may not be able to adjust well in their environment, she is open to discussing other options for his welfare.
“She clarified that her intention from the beginning was to help, and she has been very open and respectful during our conversation, just like the DENR personnel we’ve spoken to regarding Pugal,” the organization continued.
The post ended with a disclaimer, writing, “Please know that this update is meant to bring transparency and peace of mind, not to judge or assign blame. Our focus has always been on Pugal’s well-being, and we’re grateful that the adopter is open to communication and allowing us to visit. Thank you all for your continued concern and love for Pugal.”
