Filipino singer Darren Espanto has responded to a criticism that went viral after his cover of J-hope’s song.
Darren joined singers Kyle Echarri and Iñigo Pascual to perform J-hope’s “Mona Lisa.” Following a netizen’s criticism of the vocals and comparison to the K-pop idol, the video of the singer’s performance went viral.
“Dare I say… people who cant sing need to stop covering his songs. Seriously,” the user’s tweet reads.
Following the tweet going viral, Darren then clapped back at the criticism himself on X (formerly Twitter). The singer added, “Cuz one thing I won’t take is someone telling me ‘I CAN’T SING’”.

Social media users swiftly defended the well-known singer, saying that Darren has a fantastic voice and responding to the criticism with context to hit back at the criticism.
One user wrote, “Girl, bro… please be nice. Don’t put a shade to those people who cover BTS songs. As you can see they’re doing their best. Everyone can cover BTS songs even us. Choose to be kind. Peace out.”
Another user wrote, “Why? I mean…I think Hobi appreciates anyone who sings his song or covers his dance. Even if it’s not perfect…he appreciates it, so why can’t you…as a fan (are you?) do the same.”
“I just see tribute here. Good singing or not, they tried their best and that is enough. You don’t have to like it. I just see it as imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If they spent so much energy imitating Jhope, then they must really appreciate his work,” a third user wrote.
Some even mentioned that since there isn’t much rehearsal for these performances, they can’t be used to highlight Darren’s abilities.
Don’t speak to them like that like they can’t sing They’re singers who can run & belt notes and they only have limited time to prepare this song and dance prod. Why compare them when Hobi practice his song & dance to perfect his performance while them only a few hours to prepare

My gripe with this whole thing is that ppl need to understand how difficult it is. And just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean others can’t try. Ppl get mad when others lipsync but get just as feral when live singing isn’t done perfectly. Stop discouraging other artists!

Let’s maybe stop gatekeeping and appreciate when people show enthusiasm for Hobi’s (or BTS’) songs and want to cover them. It gets the songs to audiences who might otherwise miss them.

Why do you have to shame people who cover jhope’s songs? I love jhope. he’s a good artist. But these 3 guys are too. Yah, the cover was not great. but who are you to say they can’t sing? They can, and they’re good. They just have a different forte. Just like any other artist.
